Full Moon Beaver Hike, Ansonia Nature Center, Ansonia, CT, Sat. Nov. 21, 6 p.m.

For both the colonists and the Algonquin tribes, November was the time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze, in order to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. This full moon was also called the Frost Moon. Join the Ansonia Nature Center’s rangers, who will lead this unique hike designed for families. Cost is $1.00 per person. Autumnfest at Ansonia Nature Center, Sat Oct 17, 11-4

Celebrate fall at Ansonia Nature Center‘s Autumnfest! Ride over hill and dale in our horse-drawn “story” hay wagon, where you’ll hear some spooky Halloween tales!  Learn about bats, spiders and owls! Have some fresh-squeezed apple cider and fresh-made donuts, try pumpkin carving, get your face painted, and make some creative crafts. Proceeds benefit the Nature Center’s playground project. This event is rain or shine, and requires no park admission fee. For more information, call 203-736-1053.

 

Back to Basics: Natural Dyes at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center Saturday, August 1st at 10am

Interested in how you can decorate clothes and fabric using only plants? Head out to the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center Saturday, August 1st at 10am to join fiber artists Dawn Sotir and Jody Bishel in a fun lesson in naturally dying fibers. They will lead a short hike to identify plants that can be used for dyeing, then perform a demonstration. There is a fee of $8 per person, and be sure to pre-register by calling the center at (203) 736-1053.

Full Blue Moon and Firefly Hike at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center Friday (7/31) at 7:30pm

Want to explore nature trails under the blue moon and search for insects that glow? Head out the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center this Friday, July 31st at 7:30pm to join the park rangers on a nighttime walk around the trails in the park. The rangers will be looking for glowworms and fireflies. This event is for adults and children, and there is a $1 fee per person. Strap on your hiking boots, and be sure to pre-register by calling the center at 203-736-1053.

Wilderness Survival: Fire Making at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center this Saturday (6/27) at 2pm

Head over the the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center on Saturday, June 27th at 2pm to learn some valuable wilderness skills! Ranger Jessica will be teaching the group how to build a fire with natural resources found outside, like bark and dead branches. This event is free, but make sure to register by calling the center at 203-736-1053.

Little Fairies, Big Magic at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center, this Saturday at 2pm

Cyril the sorcerer will be performing an act with an environmental focus, specifically about protecting the wilderness and natural habitats. Come experience the magic at this free family program. Nature’s Child: Tidal Pools Workshop at Ansonia Nature Center tomorrow at 10:30am

Are you curious about the organisms that are able to live in the harsh environment of a tidal pool? Come to the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center learn about these animals in a hands-on activity with organisms visiting from the Long Island Sound. There will also be a craft project and a fun story! This class is on Friday, June 12th at 10:30am. 

There is a tuition fee of $7 per child, or $5 for FANCI members and Ansonia residents. This class is ideal for preschool age children and their parents! Be sure to register by calling 203-736-1053.
