Mini Explorers Camp: Wonders of Water, in Bauer Park 7/13-7/15

Bring your kids for three days of outdoor fun and learning about the aquatic habitats in Bauer Park. This mini camp takes place from Monday July 13th to Wednesday July 15th from 1pm-4pm. Make sure to dress for the weather, wear good walking shoes, and slather on the sunscreen. This is a drop off program for children ages 3-5, though parents are welcome to stay for the fun. There is a $57 fee for the three day program.

Wednesday Evening Walks at the Roaring Brook Nature Center

Head on over to the Roaring Brook Nature Center every other Wednesday evening this summer from 7:30pm-8:45pm to enjoy cooler weather. These evening walks will have a focus on animals that become more active when the sun goes down. Dates for these walks are: July 8th and 22nd and August 5th and 19th. Make sure to wear long sleeves and bring a flashlight and bug spray! There is a fee of $4 for members or $6 for non-members (children’s fee is half price).

Crazy Snakeworms at Flanders Nature Center this Tuesday night at 7pm

Come learn about the crazy snakeworms of New England at Flanders Nature Center this Tuesday, July 7th at 7pm! Join Connecticut Master Gardener and Master Composter, William Flahive, in this presentation of his research on the invasive earthworms in our own backyards. This event will take place in the Flanders Studio and there is a fee of $10 for members or $15 for nonmembers. Be sure to pre-register by calling 203-263-3711 or online

Flanders Nature Center Launches New Letterboxing Series on Their Trails

Dive into the adventurous world of letterboxing at Flanders Nature Center this summer! Start with a set of clues to find the boxes that Flanders has set up all over their trails. Once you’ve found each box, inside you’ll find a stamp which you can use to fill up a special Flanders Passport. If you find all the letterboxes, your name will live in glory on a poster in the Nature Center (and you’ll get a small prize)!

Get all the information you need to start letterboxing online or at the Nature Center office. Each trail is about 30-45 minutes long. This activity is great for families and kids of all ages. Get hunting!

Bauer Buddies Camp: Farm Fanatics next week (7/6-7/10)

Ever wondered what it was like to work on a farm over 100 years ago? Enroll in Bauer Park‘s week long camp, Farm Fanatics for a chance to go back in time. Enjoy fun farm activities such as planting, making butter, making candles, playing early American games, and searching for historical farm artifacts. This camp is ideal for kids ages 6-9 and runs Monday through Friday from 1-4pm. Be sure to dress for the weather, bring lots of sunscreen, wear closed toed shoes, and bring a snack and water. There is a fee of $98 for this week long camp. Register online for this camp on the website or by calling 203-245-5623.

Three Guided Canoe Tours at the CT Audubon Coastal Center at Milford Point this summer

Come explore the Charles E. Wheeler Salt Marsh in a guided canoe tour with the CT Audubon Society. The marsh has a wealth of birds, wildlife, and beautiful views. Dates for the tours are July 18th (12:15pm-2:45pm), August 1st (11:30am-2pm), and August 29 (10:15am-12:45pm). Make sure to pack a lunch or snack, plenty of water, and wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet! Canoes and equipment will be provided. Inclement weather (such as wind or rain) may cause the trip to be cancelled so make sure to call the Coastal Center for information before at (203) 878-7440. Be sure to pre-register as spots fill up quickly. 

To rent a Coastal Center canoe the fees are:
CAS Members $27/person, $69/canoe (3 people)
Non-members $35/person, $95/canoe (3 people)

To use your own canoe fees are:
$20 CAS Members, $30 Non-members

Full Strawberry Moon Hike at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center Saturday (6/27) at 8pm

Want to explore nature trails under the full moon? Head out the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center this Saturday, June 27th at 8pm to join the park rangers on a nighttime walk around the trails in the park. This event is for adults and children, and there is a $1 fee per person. Strap on your hiking boots, and be sure to register by calling the center at 203-736-1053.

Habitat Hunt and Hike at Session Woods Tuesday, June 30th at 10am

Head out to Session Woods this Tuesday (6/30) at 10am for a habitat hunt! First learn about the habitats and animals in Session Woods, then go on a scavenger hunt around the ecosystem. This program also includes a short hike to the beaver marsh (2 miles round trip). This free event is great for families, and all children under 12 must be accompanied by an adults. Be sure to pre-register by calling 860-424-3011 or emailing laura.rogers-castro@ct.gov. Wear good walking shoes!
